Guide Right in Wilmington
The Wilmington Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated sponsors a Guide Right Program, which provides educational and occupational guidance for the members of the local community. The Guide Right Program was established in 1948 and has provided an invaluable service to a community of approximately 400,000 constituents and 200 young men enrolled annually in the various mentoring programs. There are several High Schools in our target area. The list of schools includes and is not limited to the following: High School of Technology, Concord High School, Glasgow High School, Village Charter, Mt. Pleasant High School, Brandywine High School, William Penn High School, Moyer Academy, and A.I. DuPont High School.
Although the Wilmington Alumni Chapter provides service and support to various groups consisting on elderly, needy, homeless, etc., the primary focus of the Guide Right Program is to promote achievement, scholarship, and excellence among African-American males.
The Achievers Program
The Wilmington Alumni Chapter in conjunction with the Wilmington Chapter of The Links, Incorporated sponsors the annual Achievers Program. The program was created to encourage and motivate young African-American males to strive for excellence and portray a positive image in society. This past year, twenty-seven (27) Achievers were awarded scholarships of $30,000.00 which brings the total awards to $450,000.00 for the life of the program. The scholarships ranged from $200.00 to $4,000.00 depending on the effort put forward.
Kappa League
The Wilmington Alumni Chapter sponsors a Kappa League Program, which is designed and organized to help young men grow, receive, and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. The Kappa League Program provides educational, occupational and social guidance of male students in grades 6th-12th, throughout various schools in the New Castle County area. The nucleus and primary focus of the Kappa League revolves around the "Five Phases" which are:
- Self-Identity — Discipline, Assurance, Awareness, and Appearance
- Training — Academic, Career-Choice, Preparation, and Organization
- Competition — Politics, Career Advancement, and Sports
- Social — Religion, The Arts, Entertainment, Conversation/Communication, and Etiquette/Manners
- Health Education — Physical Fitness, Sex Education, Drug Education, and Health and Safety.
Wilmington Alumni Chapter members serve as volunteer Mentors for the Achievers and Kappa League Programs. Achievers are and Kappa Leaguers are taught practical life skills by educators, executives, doctors, entrepreneurs, and historians.
